Knowledge Base

Referrals are a big part of a successful loyalty program. Therefore, WooRewards offers a lot of possibilities for it. In this documentation, you’ll learn how to use this feature to its full extent.

Referral Settings

Before starting to give rewards to referrers and referees, you need to look at some settings. In order to do that, go to the following page :

WordPress Admin
Admin menu
WooRewards
Menu entry
Settings
Page
General Settings
Tab

You’ll see a list of options in the Referrals options group :

  • Enable Referrals : Enable the referral feature
  • Allow Referral via referral link : When a visitor comes from a referral link and registers, he will be referred by the user that posted the link.
  • Try to shorten the referral url : Disable that feature if you encounter plugin conflicts or redirection problems. Disable that feature makes bigger and less readable QR codes.
  • Alternative Short Site URL : To make the QR-Code as simple as possible, you can specify a shorter version of your site URL here that will be used as base for the image generation.
  • Allow referrals via social share : When a visitor comes from a link posted on a social network and registers, he will be referred by the user that shared the post.
  • Max referrals per customer : Set the maximum referrals allowed for users. No restriction on empty value or zero (0).
  • Email Referee Reward : When customers use the email referral feature, you can send an immediate coupon to the email recipient.

Set the options you want and you can move on to rewarding your customers for referrals.

Referral Methods

Referrals are a good way to grow your number of customers. However, you should only use them in specific cases. Customers will most likely refer their friends. As a result, using referrals will only bring new customers if existing customers are willing to share it with their friends and family. If you want to improve referral effectiveness, use it in combination with a good customer service.

In WooRewards, there are 3 different methods to refer new customers :

Email
Send a referral email
  • Use the email sponsorship form with a friend’s email address
  • The friend receives an email with a coupon discount
  • When the friend registers, the sponsor is rewarded
Link
URL or QR Code Referral Link
  • Share the Referral Link or QR Code with a friend
  • The friend visits the link and is rewarded when he creates an account
  • The sponsor is rewarded when the sponsee registers or place an order
Social Share
Use Social Media
  • Share the website content on social medias with friends
  • Friends visit the link and are rewarded when they create an account
  • The sponsor is rewarded when sponsees register or place an order

There are different ways to reward both the sponsors and the sponsees by using these three methods. We’ll explore these different options now.

Referrals Tutorial

The best way to understand the full potential of referralsis probably to try our referrals tutorial. Click on the card below and follow it to set it up.

Referrals
Attract new customers
Use this loyalty program to turn your customers into real ambassadors. The more people they refer, the higher their rank is. They’re also rewarded for each referral order.

If you don’t want to use the tutorial, let’s see in detail how to use the referral feature.

Referral Methods

In this section, we’ll explain the 3 different referral methods you can use on your website’s front end. However, using these methods will only allow your customers to refer their friends. To reward them, be sure to read th Referral Rewards section.

Use Referral Emails

With this feature, you can let your customers refer their friends by sending them an email directly from your website. In addition, the referee can get an immediate discount when visiting your store.

First, you have to use the referral email shortcode somewhere on your website. Find the appropriate spot and use the following shortcode :

[lws_sponsorship header="Refer your friends" button="Send" unlogged="true"]

As a result, your customers will see a form when they can enter their friends’ email adresses.

If you want to offer a coupon to referees, go to the following page :

General Settings
Tab

Now go to the referral section and go to the Email Referee Reward option. Set the coupon reward that referees will get when they receive an email. We’ll see how to reward the referral after explaining other referring tools.

The referral link tool will display either an url or a QR Code for your customers to share with their friends. You can do so by using the following shortcode

[wr_referral_link showlink="true"]

Unlike the email tool, Referrals can’t earn points when they copy the link.

Use Social Share

The last possibility to refer new people is to use social media sharing. In order to do it, use the following shortcode on your website

[lws_social_share popup="yes" showunconnected="yes" networks="facebook,twitter,pinterest,linkedin,whatsapp"]

When customers click on a scial share button, the link they share will contain a specific information that will allow WooRewards to find the referral if somebody clicks the shared link.

Referral Reward

Now that all the referral tools are in place on your website, it’s time to reward the referrals. There are several ways to reward them. First, you have to go and edit a points and rewards system. If you don’t know how to do that, go read this documentation first.

If you’re already familiar with points and rewards systems, go to this page :
